Buying vs. Renting a Phone Line

Topics: Cellular Phones, Telephones

If you are going to be in the country a long time (years and years), spend the money and buy a line.

Otherwise, rent the line from NTT for an extra 600 yen per month. If you really want to save a little more money, get rid of your touchtone service and switch to dial/pulse. This is about 300 to 400 yen per month. It all adds up over the years. Simply say no to all those wonderful but hardly used services that NTT offers.

Also, call people's cell phones only if they are not at home, it is very expensive compared to calling a land line (about 24 yen per minute to a cell phone compared to only 8 yen for three minutes to a land line).
