JalanTopics: Accommodations, Travel For discounts at major city hotels, try looking at Japanese sources. My absolute FAVORITE in this regard is the Jalan (in hiragana) magazine, which comes out monthly. You can get this at conbini or bookstores. They have different regional editions (one in Hokkaido, one for Tokyo, one for Kansai). This magazine is just packed with package deals, cheap hotel information, and other great stuff. You can usually get a Japanese friend (or spouse!) to call and help you make the reservations, and much of the information is in codes or pictures. I would not, however, recommend the Jalan website (http://www.jalan.net/) -- too slow and difficult to use. WJ Jalan offers great hotel deals (often local) for even luxury hotels. Go to your local bookstore and ask for Jalan (its written on the cover in hiragana) or alternately search online here. The plans will sometimes have cool upgrade options - we recently stayed at the Keio Plaza hotel for Y19,000 for two people on a weeknight, and were upgraded to a special suite room that was huge.
