Shipping Large ItemsTopics: Moving, Postage, Sayonara Sales, Selling Items, Shipping Resources for Economical Shipping of Smaller LoadsWhile the Post Office or traditional takkyubin (courier) companies can be used for clothes, books, and well-packaged small home furnishings or knick-knacks, larger items like televisions, sofas, beds, mattresses, and the like are a challenge. After several attempts at pricing, I have found one company that offers competitive shipping for goods of this type: Moving Co.'s 'Nandemo-bin' (Ship Anything Service) The company's homepage is in Japanese only, but the above web site has pictures that make it fairly easy to get an estimate on what you want to ship. I have, in the past month, shipped a sofa across three prefectures for 6000 yen, a bed frame for 4500 yen, and a mattress for 7500 yen. Shipping a small TV is only 1300 yen, while a small-sized refrigerator is only 3000 yen. The company charges extra for bringing heavy items up flights of stairs, and for 'kumitate' or assembly services. Compared to renting a small truck (Akabo) or engaging a handyman that charges by the hour or mileage, this is a pretty good deal. And similar services by takkyubin companies were 2000 to 3000 yen more expensive (in the sofa and bed case for me). To order, call your local sales office (eigyousho), which can be found at the following list: (Scroll to the bottom if you don't see it). The company seems to be based in Kanto, so sorry non-Kanto residents! The sender/recipient payment service is also handy: the person you sell your item to can pay them directly for the shipping. Note that same-day shipping is unavailable (shipping takes two days), and they only have two time frames: 9AM to 2PM and 2PM to 6PM, for pick-up and delivery! Regardless, I hope this is helpful for you! WJ << Shin Osaka Youth Hostel | Index | Shoe Care >> |
