Super HotelTopics: Accommodations, Travel Though this is not a Japanese-y type place, I would like to recommend the Super Hotel chain (http://www.superhotel.co.jp) in general as a great place to stay. Their basic rates for a clean, private single Western style room with a bathroom are Y4,800/night, which includes a free breakfast in the lounge with coffee and yummy bread. They have "super rooms" which can fit 2-3 people - either in a semi-double bed (price goes down a lot per person) or a semi-double and a loft for kids. They also offer connecting rooms for parties of four. Other amenities included free newspapers, a TV in the room, and a nice Internet corner in the lounge. The rooms also have the usual accoutrements of more expensive hotels: yukata, toothbrush/toothpaste, and hair dryers on loan. Note there are no phones and refrigerators in the rooms, however. The only downside: a lot of these places, while located close to train stations, are not located in the city center. They have Tokyo locations, for example, in Akebane, Ikebukuro, and Kamiedo - not too far out, but not exactly Shinjuku either. My favorite Super Hotel is the Super Hotel Osaka City Tennenonsen, which has (oddly enough) a natural hot springs spa attached to it! It's just been renovated, and prices per person for a semi-double, well-equipped room are Y3,491 (including onsen!). WJ I have stayed many times at the Super Hotel City Sendai, about 7 minutes walk from Koh-toh-dai-koh-en Subway Station. 4,980 for a single room, including a small refrigerator. Plentiful breakfast. Newspapers in Japanese. Full bath in each room, plus fair-sized group bath, reserved for women only unil 9 PM; men only thereafter. There is another Super Hotel at Hirose-dori Subway Station, charging 5,980 for a single. Natural hot spring water in the group bath. << Staying Cool in the Kitchen | Index | SWET Book Fair >> |
