Walking is the best way to see most towns in Japan. It is also free. There are a number of designated heritage walks around different towns, information on which will hopefully be added soon.

The beauty of Japanese cities is that they were designed around walking, not driving, and therefore are very compact, particularly in the old quarters, so you find that you can walk around quite easily.
