Add A Tip

First search the site to see if anyone else has posted a tip like the one you are thinking of adding. If you find one that is similar, and you think you can add some more information about the exact same topic, just click on the link in the top right corner of that page to add your own comment to the page. (See Smelly Feet for an example a page with multiple contributors.)

If no one has written anything like the tip that you are about to add, go ahead and add it!

How to Add a Tip to the Frugal Japan Wiki (The Easy Way)

Please follow these instructions if you are not familiar with wikis and you just want to enter the information and let someone else put it into the index.

1. Go the Tips from Readers page.

2. Click on the link in the top right corner of that page to edit the page.

3. Add your tip to that page by typing it in. Add your name or initials to the bottom of your post.

4. Press the "Save" button at the bottom of the screen.

Someone who is familiar with the wiki will then move your tip to the right place in the wiki by following the directions below.

How to Add a Tip to the Frugal Japan Wiki (For Wiki Enthusiasts)

1. Think up a title for your tip.

2. Go to the index page.

3. Click on the link in the top right corner of that page to edit the page.

4. Add the title to the page (in alphabetical order, please) and enclose it with double square brackets. Please use title case (capitalize initial letters as you would for a title).

eg. [[Write the Title of Your Tip Like This in Title Case]]

5. Enter your name as the "Author" in the form at the bottom of the editing page and save the page.

6. Once the page has been saved, you will be brought back to the regular index page. If you look at where you added the new link, you should see the title in blue, underlined, and with a little question mark on the right side.

eg. Write the Title of Your Tip Like This in Title Case?

7. Click on the link you have just created.

8. You will be brought to an editing page for your tip. The tip template will show up automatically in the editing page.

9. Add the title after the "(:title" and before the ":)". This step is necessary for two reasons. One is to correct the automatic capitalization that the wiki software imposes. The second is to make sure the title shows up when users click on "Random Tip". If no title is set, the user will just see the title "Random Tip".

eg. (:title Write the Title of Your Tip Like This in Title Case:)

10. Delete all irrelevant topics. If the tip is not limited to a particular place, delete the "Places:" line entirely.

eg. Topics: [[!Food]], [[!Recipes]]

11. Type in the content of your tip.

12. Sign your name or initials after the "sign" command. If you put your name in the "Author" field at the bottom of the editing page, your can just put ~~~~ after the "sign" command and your name and the date and time will be added automatically.

eg. %sign%SC
or
%sign%~~~~

13. If you didn't enter your name as the "Author" in the form at the bottom of the editing page in step#5, please do so now.

14. Save the page and admire your handiwork!
